Each milestone of a couple’s marriage should be celebrated with traditional anniversary gifts. As one may recognize, the gifts during the first years of marriage are often given to symbolize that of a growing household. The first five years of marriage are symbolized by the following traditional anniversary gifts respectively: paper, cotton, leather, flowers and wood. Paper symbolizes that of the strength of two people as a couple, while cotton signifies durability and prosperity. Although leather also shows durability, it is more focused on the durability of marriage. Flowers are a good representation of a fruitful relationship, and lastly, wood reminds a couple of a long-lasting marriage.
The next fifteen years are represented in these traditional anniversary gifts: china wares, tin, crystal and silver. This set of gifts are still household gifts but are already considered more luxurious. For example, china wares are still useful items at home but are definitely not an everyday acquisition. Tin emphasizes flexibility while crystal represents a couple’s harmony. Lastly, it has always been a tradition to give a silver wreath during the 25th year anniversary.
